The Eric Liddell Centre

The Helping Hand Programme

"Local people helping us to help others"

Helping Hands - volunteering in EdinburghOn any day that you choose to visit the Eric Liddell Daycare Service, you are likely to find people helping the Centre's staff to help others. On a typical day you might find a sixth former from one of the local schools helping one of the staff to give some of the clients a manicure while chatting happily about her studies and what she hopes to do after school.  Another table has been set up for dominoes which are being played with evident fun between the clients and the helper. Over beside the piano a couple of clients and a helper are selecting music to listen to and discuss, very soon the strains will filter over to the domino players who quietly hum the tune as they play. Another volunteer looks up online records of charitable trusts to pull out the ones that our Fundraising Manager can then send a persuasive funding application to.

The Centre is indebted to its volunteer helpers who, by giving up some of their time, are enriching the lives of others and gaining skills and satisfaction for themselves. The benefits for younger helpers go beyond this and will include relational skills and references for potential employers or university entrance.

What we need

As an Edinburgh charity working with local people the Eric Liddell Centre is able to do more because people want to assist us. Of course, if we have more helpers, we can do even more.

You can lend a hand in a number of ways including:

  • Helping in the Day Care Service* and its home based activity service.
  • Giving a hand to set up our new lunch service for older people starting in spring 2012.
  • Offering a helping hand at the Centre's reception.
  • Doing odd jobs around the building, including a bit of painting and decorating.
  • Helping carers through the Carer Befriending Service.
  • Helping us organise our series of fundraising events.
  • Acting as host for a Centre based course.
  • Admin support.
  • Using your creative skills to design new leaflets, posters etc.
  • Giving talks to local Rotary Clubs and other community groups.
  • Helping us spread awareness of our social media platforms.

Training

This will depend what service you are lending a hand with but may include reminiscence, life story work, first aid, and dementia awareness to mention a few.

Can you help?

If you are able to give some time on a regular basis, whether that is weekly, fortnightly, monthly or even daily and you want to help us make life better for local people, we would love to hear from you.
