As New York Fashion Week begins to wind down this year, the Eric Liddell Centre is teaming up with Andiamo to bring a touch of glamour to South Edinburgh as they host their second ever fundraising fashion show. With support from George Watson’s College, the Bruntsfield based clothes shop will preview their latest collection in support of the dementia care charity and community hub on Thursday 12th September at the school. Volunteers from the Eric Liddell Centre and pupils from George Watson’s will act as models for Andiamo’s clothing and accessories. Items from Beria will also be showcased. £25,000 Boost for Eric Liddell Centre
The Eric Liddell Centre, today announced support of £25,000 towards the services it offers to support vulnerable people throughout the city. The funding has been provided by the Garfield Weston Foundation, an organisation who donates around £70 million to charities across the UK every year. The money will be used to support the Eric Liddell Centre’s continuing work with carers and people living with dementia. Eric Liddell Centre Funding Boost to Benefit Visitors with Hearing Problems
The Eric Liddell Centre is making steps to improve accessibility for visitors with hearing issues thanks to an award from the Elise Pilkington Charitable Trust. Eric Liddell Centre Teaming Up with Heriot Watt to Host Chinese Cultural Classes
The Eric Liddell Centre is to host a range of Chinese cultural classes and activities as part of a summer programme in association with Heriot Watt University. The Confucius Institute for Business and Communication at the University are providing tutors to lead weekly workshops over July and August at the community hub in South Edinburgh. The classes will include an introduction to basic Chinese language in addition to brush painting, calligraphy and Mahjong. Eric Liddell Centre to Host Wildlife Exhibition by Award Winning Artist
The Eric Liddell Centre is gearing up to host an exhibition by award winning artist John Threlfall. John has been a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) since 2007. He is also a member of the Artists’ for Nature Foundation (ANF) and is a previous winner of the Swarovski/Birdwatch Magazine Bird Artist of the Year. His work has also yielded commissions including hide murals for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds at Mersehead, Dumfries and Galloway and Lochwinnoch, Ayrshire; and murals and illustrations for the National Trust for Scotland at Grey Mare’s Tail, Threave and Rockcliffe. Eric Liddell Centre Plan Next Step to Secure Future of Caring Soles
The Eric Liddell Centre have set an aspirational three-year fundraising target of £120,000 to secure the future of their popular Caring Soles footcare service. The care charity and community hub based in South Edinburgh are refusing to rest on their laurels after successfully launching an emergency fundraising appeal in January which has raised £40,000 for the service following an unsuccessful funding bid made to the Edinburgh Integrated Joint Board in late 2018. The £40,000 raised so far ensures the delivery of Caring Soles until the end of March 2020. Band featuring BBC Personality to Play Concert in Support of Eric Liddell Centre
A folk supergroup are to play a gig in Edinburgh in support of the Eric Liddell Centre. The Walnuts, who have played concerts across the UK and Europe to raise money for dementia will perform at Morningside United Church on the 14th June to raise funds for the Eric Liddell Centre, as part of their Lighthouse Tour of Scotland. The band includes Scottish folk music veterans, Fergus Muirhead and Donald Stewart in addition to Matt Allwright, famous for presenting BBC shows such as Rogue Traders and Watchdog. ELC Upgrades Day Care Facility with Hospital Saturday Fund Donation
The Hospital Saturday Fund Charity Reception at The City Chambers, Glasgow on 21st February 2019. The Eric Liddell Centre has launched an urgent fundraising appeal for its popular Caring Soles Footcare Service, following an unsuccessful funding application to the Edinburgh Integrated Joint Board. The service, which was set up following discussions with NHS Lothian Podiatry in January 2017, now faces an uncertain future without financial support. Caring Soles helps people with non-medical footcare support, while also responding to loneliness and social isolation. The Centre welcomed the former ballerina into their building earlier this year for the filming of ‘Dancing to Happiness’ which aired on Saturday 1st December on BBC Two. Eric Liddell Centre Registers Huge Increase in Demand
The Eric Liddell Centre has registered a major increase in demand for its services for the second year in a row. The ELC provided 8118.5 hours of community activity – a 59 per cent increase from the previous year – where 5106 hours were recorded and almost double the 4110 hours recorded in 2015/16. One hundred and thirty seven groups used the centre during the year for a wide variety of activities including sports and exercise, art, education and training, health promotion and children’s groups. Caring Soles Receives £24,000 Boost at First Anniversary
This month, the Eric Liddell Centre’s highly praised Caring Soles project celebrates its first full year of operation. The service, which has twice been commended in motions at the Scottish Parliament, aims to tackle social isolation among the elderly by providing basic personal footcare treatment. The service has been further bolstered with a funding award of £24,000 from the Weir Charitable Trust which has allowed a new and additional satellite hub in Wester Hailes as the care charity looks to improve lives across the capital. Edinburgh Laughter Club, Scotland’s longest running community laughter club has celebrated five years of occupancy at the Eric Liddell Centre. In the half decade that Laughter for Health has ran sessions at Centre, based in South Edinburgh, they have raised a total of £8,305 for the care charity and community hub. Eric Liddell’s daughter launches her book "God and Me"
The daughter of Scottish Olympic gold medallist, Eric Liddell, has written a book about the man she never met. Maureen Liddell Moore is one of three children and was three years old when her father died in 1945 whilst he was being kept captive in the Japanese World War II Weihsien Internment Camp in China. Eric was a missionary for almost twenty years before he was held prisoner in the camp and was known as a hero in both sports and Christianity through his time teaching at The Anglo Chinese College and especially for his work with his fellow prisoners. Following his death, various memorials were set up in the athlete’s name, including The Eric Liddell Centre, a registered care charity and major community hub, in Edinburgh. Defibrillator Received from St John and the City Project
The Eric Liddell Centre has become the latest recipient of a public access defibrillator through St John Scotland’s ‘St John and the City’ project. The ‘St John and the City Public Access Defibrillator Project’, which has been backed by Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, has now placed over 130 life-saving defibrillators across Edinburgh and surrounding areas since its inception last year. The latest defibrillator, which was funded by the Viewforth Trust, can be found within the Eric Liddell Centre, to the wall on the right after the main entrance. Joint Initiative for Families and Carers in Edinburgh to mark World Alzheimer’s Day
Leading Scottish law firm Gillespie Macandrew has partnered with the Eric Liddell Centre to offer a free of charge drop-in session for families and carers on World Alzheimer’s Day, Thursday 21 September. Caring Soles Project Steps into Gorgie
The Eric Liddell Centre's ‘Caring Soles’ programme has launched personal footcare service satellite site in the Gorgie/Dalry area and is looking for volunteers. This will run on Tuesdays from St Martins Community Resource Centre (232 Dalry Road, EH11 2JG). The service is kindly promoted by the social group for people over 60, ‘Good Morning Gorgie’ who meet there every Tuesday over teas/coffees and a light lunch between 10am – 12.30 which accompanies activities that include: creative writing, knitting, seated exercise and invited speakers. The Eric Liddell Centre helps tackle loneliness and isolation in Edinburgh
The Eric Liddell Centre has been helping older people in the capital dealing with loneliness and isolation, thanks to a new initiative. The South West Villages project works to strengthen services for older people by identifying ways to increase social interaction and reduce the chances of becoming isolated. More than 250 people took part in a survey as part of the initiative to gauge local feeling on the discontinuation of bus services to the Gyle shopping centre and medical facilities. £40,000 Boost for Dementia Care in the Capital
The Eric Liddell Centre today announced support of over £40,000 towards the services it offers to support people with dementia. The Centre’s new dementia befriending programme received funding of £36,000 from the Dementia Engagement Empowerment Project (DEEP), the Robertson Trust, and the Life Changes Trust. The programme gives people with dementia a voice and through the various activities available in the centre, they are encouraged to give feedback, using a range of methods such as structured questionnaires, voting and focus groups, to bring out the voices of people with dementia. Oldest living student of Olympic hero Eric Liddell visits Edinburgh
A 90-year-old man, believed to be the last living student of Scottish athlete Eric Liddell, has visited the Edinburgh community hub set up in the Olympic hero’s name. Eric Liddell is well known in Scotland as an Olympic gold medallist who studied and played rugby at Edinburgh University in the early 1920s. However Eric moved to China in 1925 until his passing in 1945, using his athletic experience to teach boys a number of sports, as well as science, at The Anglo Chinese College. Dr HK Cheng was a pupil of Eric’s in the 1930s. Dr Cheng visited the Eric Liddell Centre, a care charity and community hub set up in the late athlete’s name, to see the work they carry out

Support for People with Dementia is Vital for Wellbeing
Dr Martha Pollard the Dementia Support and Education Co-Ordinator at the Eric Liddell Centre recently contributed to The Scotman's 200 Voices speaking about her role here. Scotland’s National Dementia Strategy 2017-2020 places person-centred, flexible care at the heart of support for people with dementia. It is underpinned by continuing to develop the skills of staff who support people with dementia and carers, through Promoting Excellence and The Standards of Care for Dementia in Scotland. In my role as dementia support and education co-ordinator at the Eric Liddell Centre, a registered care charity and community hub in Edinburgh, I have the privilege of supporting people living with dementia and their carers. The centre’s aim is to help people remain involved and included in community.

Eric Liddell Centre Registers Major Increase in Demand
Over the last year we've seen a substantial increase in activity at the Eric Liddell Centre. The Centre provided 5106 hours of community activity – a 24 per cent increase from the previous year – where 4110 hours were recorded. One hundred and thirty seven groups used the Centre during the year for a wide variety of activities including sports and exercise, art, education and training, health promotion and children’s groups. The Centre’s Lunch Breaks Group meets each Friday and is attended by an average of 16 cared for/carer pairs. Last year, this programme provided 1920 person-hours of social and emotional support for people with dementia and carers. A total of 768 hot meals were provided. Edinburgh SW Foodbank
The Eric Liddell Centre is becoming a collection point for the Edinburgh SW Foodbank in collaboration with Edinburgh Gorgie Salvation Army. A table has been set up on the ground floor next to the banners today where you can donate non-perishable food items like, cereal, soups, tinned meat and vegetables, UHT milk and pasta. Toiletries such as shower gel, toothpaste, shampoo, shaving gel and feminine products are also welcome. Please spread the word to friends and family and help to provide emergency food for local people in crisis. More information on how to contribute is available through The Trussell Trust

Caring Soles Footcare Service
Our Caring Soles Footcare service is looking for enthusiastic volunteers who want to help combat social isolation among the elderly. Assisting with the footcare of elderly individuals with mobility issues can go a long way in helping to improve their mood and confidence. Coming along to the Centre also enables clients to make contact with their community that they may otherwise not be able to have. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for this programme, you can complete an online form on the Get involved section of the website.
